On January 21, 2026, Members of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs convened a public roundtable titled “Frontline of Fraud: Preventing Scams Against Servicemembers, Veterans, and Their Families.” The discussion examined how fraud and low-quality schemes target veterans, servicemembers, and military families, including predatory education programs, deceptive recruiting, online scams, claims sharks, and pension poaching that drain federal benefits while delivering poor outcomes. Participants included veterans service organizations, consumer protection advocates, former federal enforcement leaders, and officials who served at the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Federal Trade Commission. Will Hubbard of Veterans Education Success highlighted how education fraud follows a repeatable playbook once GI Bill access is granted and discussed policy solutions to protect veterans and taxpayers, including minimum quality standards, stronger transparency tools, and automatic restoration of GI Bill benefits when fraud is confirmed.
