On May 5, 2021, the Department of Defense (DoD) issued a memorandum to the Department of Veterans approving concurrent usage of DoD Tuition Assistance (TA) and Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve Education Benefit (MGIB-SR or chapter 1606).
DoD has the authority to set this policy because both benefits are under Title 10 of the US Code. This rescinds DoD’s 2015 guidance to allow all qualified recipients of MGIB-SR to use both TA and MGIB-SR benefits concurrently when enrolled in a program of education that is half-time or greater. Concurrent use is not authorized when enrolled less than half-time.
