Director of Federal Policy

About the Position

Veterans Education Success seeks a Director of Federal Policy to guide and execute the organization’s policy and advocacy efforts. The Director reports to the Vice President for Higher Education Policy and the Vice President for Veterans & Military Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Represent organization as key point of contact across government agencies, Capitol Hill offices, and external partners, in tandem with the Vice Presidents
  • Work with President and Vice Presidents to shape policy goals and priorities
  • Monitor, analyze, and draft comments on federal statutory and regulatory proposals
  • Testify before various federal agencies and Congressional committees, as needed
  • Speak to the news media, as needed

The Ideal Candidate Brings:

  • Experience with higher education policy and/or veterans policy
  • Clear grasp of the legislative process and regulatory rulemaking process
  • Strong writing skills and verbal presentation skills
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in the formulation and recommendation of policy positions and advocacy strategy
  • Demonstrated success as a self-starter, capable of managing workflow and deadlines independently
  • A low-ego mentality, comfortable working in an egalitarian, team-driven work environment
  • Bachelor’s Degree

Federal Policy Manager

About the Position

The Federal Policy Manager should have some familiarity with the legislative process and federal executive branch agencies, but will primarily assist and learn from our senior staff. Familiarity with higher education and/or veterans policy is a plus.

Position Duties:

  • Monitor and analyze federal legislative and regulatory proposals
  • Represent the organization in meetings and public hearings.
  • Prepare and submit statements for the record as well as written and oral testimony;
  • Coordinate with allies to assist on federal policies;
  • Bring forward student veterans for testimony and meetings with Congressional committee members; organize annual “fly-in” day for student veterans

Staff Attorney

About the Position

Veterans Education Success seeks a Staff Attorney to help student veterans who contact us with concerns about their school or their GI Bill and other federal education benefits. The Staff Attorney will work closely with the Senior Attorney and Vice President for Legal Affairs for Veterans Education Success.

Responsibilities

  • Providing direct assistance and counseling to veterans and servicemembers 
  • Triaging student veteran complaints and requests for help
  • Researching and updating resources for student veteran assistance
  • Researching and drafting memoranda to assist in advocacy efforts to federal and state agencies on behalf of veterans and service members who were victims of fraud
  • Coordinating with our policy team to help our veterans share their stories with policymakers and through media interviews
  • Providing written and oral comments to oversight agencies

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Has experience with VA education benefits and other federal education benefits or has a demonstrated record of learning a complex subject matter
  • Has an interest in consumer protection 
  • Is a good communicator, both orally and in writing
  • Will listen to student veterans with compassion
  • Pays attention to detail
  • Has strong time management skills
  • Is able to work independently

Qualifications 

J.D. and Bar Admission required, but no specific state bar exam is necessary

About the Position

Veterans Education Success seeks a Veterans Advocate to help student veterans who contact us with concerns about their school or their GI Bill and other federal education benefits. The Veterans Advocate will work closely with attorneys at Veterans Education Success.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing and assessing student veteran complaints and requests for help
  • Responding by phone and email to student veterans who contact us
  • Researching and updating resources for student veteran assistance
  • Identifying issues for senior staff, civic engagement, and policy teams
  • Drafting summaries of student complaints and analyses of potential solutions

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Has experience with VA education benefits and other federal education benefits or has a demonstrated record of learning a complex subject matter
  • Is familiar with complaint management
  • Is a good communicator, both orally and in writing
  • Will listen to student veterans with compassion
  • Pays attention to detail
  • Has strong time management skills

Fellowships

Veterans Education Success considers requests to host individuals for fellowships, where the projects align with our areas of expertise in veterans’ higher education issues and the fellow is able to identify their own outside source of funding. This includes current law students from any ABA-accredited law school seeking a postgraduate fellowship that is partially or fully funded by an external source, such as a Skadden fellowship, Equal Justice Works, Justice Catalyst, Soros, or a program funded by your school. In recent years, we have hosted law fellows from Georgetown University and George Washington University who have worked on a mix of legal and policy work.
