WASHINGTON D.C. — Lima native Tasha Berkhalter told Senate Democrats she was deeply concerned about the firing of borrower defense teams at the Department of Education at a hearing Tuesday afternoon.
The U.S. Army veteran made news in 2020 when she was left on the hook for $100,000 in student loan debt with a worthless degree after the closure of ITT Tech and shared her story with U.S. Senators including Chuck Schumer, Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker.
“Every day borrower defense applicants are forced to wait is a nightmare,” she said. “I was saddened to hear that the entire teams responsible for processing them were recently fired and I am worried this will make it harder for veterans like me to pursue our dreams.”
