As Congress returns to Washington and prepares to consider major veterans legislation in the coming weeks, a growing debate is unfolding over the future of the GI Bill and student protections that have safeguarded veterans’ education benefits for decades.
Veterans, military families, higher education advocates, and policy experts will hold a virtual press conference to discuss concerns that several provisions in the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act (TCAVA – H.R. 9237 / S. 4744) could reshape veterans’ education benefits for years to come, as well as pending legislation on the otherwise widely settled “90/10 Rule.”
The speakers support many parts of TCAVA, but they will explain why they believe Congress should strengthen key provisions before final passage. Specifically, speakers will discuss concerns that the legislation could:
- Expand GI Bill eligibility to unaccredited and low-value education and training programs.
- Weaken long-standing quality safeguards and accountability for GI Bill-funded programs.
- Increase taxpayer spending without improving educational outcomes.
- Continue leaving veterans who lost GI Bill benefits after attending fraudulent schools without restoring the education benefits they earned.
With key congressional action expected in the coming weeks, speakers will discuss what’s at stake for veterans, military families, taxpayers, and the long-term integrity of one of America’s most successful earned benefits.
During the briefing, Veterans Education Success will release a new Situation Report (SitRep) outlining the most significant education-related provisions in TCAVA and the changes veterans’ organizations are urging Congress to adopt before final consideration.
