“It is absolutely true that we very frequently see individuals who are definitely worse off economically, emotionally and psychologically because they use their benefits to attend ‘college,’” said Barmak Nassirian, Veterans Education Success vice president for higher education policy.

Many people are looking for reform, and checks and balances to ensure universities are being transparent about what they offer and how their degrees can be useful post-grad.

“You need to ensure that veterans have access to quality institutions that provide truthful explanations of what it is they offer, what the outcomes are and that can stand behind those claims in the form of evidence that, in fact, they’re leaving people better off as opposed to worse off,” said Nassirian.
