Veterans Education Success, a nonprofit advocacy group, was the first to raise concerns back in 2019. They documented whistleblower accounts and pressed federal agencies to investigate.

“This should never have happened,” said William Hubbard, vice president for Veterans & Military Policy at the group. “The federal government was funding what students themselves described as a cult. That’s a clear failure of enforcement.”

Even with the indictments, many veterans may never get their GI Bill benefits back. Current law makes it nearly impossible for veterans to recover lost benefits once they’ve been used.

“The harsh truth is, with few exceptions, there’s no way for a veteran to get their GI Bill restored,” Hubbard said.
